Here are some things you should do to help them out.
- The last thing they need from a friend or family member is to be judged. Maybe they did make a mistake, maybe they did so some wrong, but judging them is not going to help them to adapt. It is only going to make them more crazy. If they did wrong, I am sure they are aware of it. Instead of bringing up what they did to get in their, talk about what they should do when they get out of there.
- In my opinion, it is important for a wife or girlfriend to let them know how much they care, but try your hardest not to breakdown every time you have contact. You have to try to be as strong as possible for them. They are going to need to lean on you. They are going to need to have some memories of the past and feel some familiarity in a very unfamiliar place. Keep conversations normal and light.
- Sent letters, keep communication. Inmates are often very bored and lonely. You need to keep their mind going. Help them get magazines and books. Write often. Visit when you can. Send pictures. Anything to help pass time in a pleasant manner will help. Find newspaper articles or magazine clippings that they will like and send it to them. Take some time out of your day to spend on them. They will appreciate it.
These are just a few things that you can do to help your loved one get through this hard time. I think that the most important of all is to be supportive and to make sure they know that they are not alone.
